Life of preserves

How long do canned goods last?

The shelf life of canned goods varies depending on the type of food, storage conditions and heat treatment used during production. In general, canned goods can last 1 to 5 years or more if stored properly and the containers are not damaged.

Canned foods are generally non-perishable foods and can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Containers should not be exposed to humidity or extreme temperature variations, as this can damage food or cause corrosion of the containers.

However, it is important to note that the shelf life of canned goods can be influenced by factors such as the quality of the ingredients, the heat treatment method used, the pH of the food and the type of contents. For example, canned fruit tends to have a shorter shelf life than canned vegetables or meats due to their acid content. Additionally, canning containers that have dents, leaks or openings should be discarded because they can allow air, water or bacteria to enter and contaminate the food.
